The GMT Master is Rolex’s signature pilot’s watch, complete with dual-time capabilities. It came to market in 1955, with ref. 1675 following shortly after in 1959. It’s one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex watches on the secondary market because it’s instantly recognizable with its 24-hour bezel and dedicated GMT hand. The Rolex 1675 was also notably the first GMT Master to use crown guards. Rolex initially used glossy dials in the 1675 until around 1966 and switched to matte dials.
This circa 1978 GMT is in overall beautiful and has a great look with its vibrant bezel and perfectly aged lume; we love that light yellow color, it really pops against the matte black dial. It even comes with its box and punched papers which is always a bonus.
This example has what collectors refer to as a Mark 3 “Radial” dial and the defining characteristic of this is placement and size of the lume plots. They are placed a bit further away from the minute hash-marks giving this dial a distinct look. The “Radial Dial” is one of the most sought after matte dial variations due to its unique appearance.
